ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 13-ranked Georgia women's golf team shot a 6-over 294 and remained third on the leaderboard for the 39th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the UGA Golf Course on Saturday.
Marta Silva Zamora paced the Bulldogs with a 1-under 71, moving her to second in the individual field and just a stroke off the pace of Purdue's Numa Gulyanamitta.
"They hung in there today," head coach Kelley Hester said today. "We had some highs and lows. We weren't quite as steady as we were yesterday. I'm proud of the effort. They played well overall. Given the windy conditions on the golf course, it was really challenging today. We didn't shoot ourselves in the foot. We're within striking distance. Maybe we can go out there tomorrow and do something special."
The Classic is utilizing a team "best ball" format, with the low four scores from each hole comprising the team tally for that hole. In addition, all five golfers from each school have been paired together.
Georgia teed off from No. 3 and moved to 2-under after playing both No. 5 and No. 6 at 1-under. The Bulldogs gave one stroke back at No. 10 and played No. 15 at 2-over to leave red numbers. Georgia compiled a 3-over mark at No. 17 to climb to 5-over on the day. The Bulldogs gained one stroke back at No. 18 but played No. 1 at 2-over and finished at 6-over.
Silva Zamora birdied No. 4 and No. 5 to quickly move to 2-under. She bogeyed No. 10 but birdied No. 12. Silva Zamora's back-and-forth finish featured bogeys at No. 16 and No. 17, a birdie at No. 18, a double-bogey at No. 1 and birdies at No. 2 and No. 3.
Additionally for Georgia, Milena Savich fired a 76, Emilie Burger shot 77, Tess Fordham, who is competing as an individual, posted a 79, Kiara Hayashida recorded an 80 and Abby Johnson finished at 81.
Gulyanamitta shot 73 on Saturday but wasn't overly thrilled with her loop.
"I'm not really pleased with my performance today," Gulyanamitta said. "I made a lot of mistakes out there and I wish I would have done better. But I have to go with whatever I have, and that's what I had. Tomorrow I'm going to do my best again, that's all I need to do. I'll do whatever I can to play my game and concentrate on what I'm doing.
"I'm really enjoying the format of the tournament," she continued. "My teammates get along really well and it's nice to spend the whole day with your teammates."
Gulyanamitta leads Silva Zamora and Arkansas' Emily Tubert by one entering Sunday's final round. Burger is tied for 16th at 150, Hayashida is tied for 60th at 156 and Fordham, Johnson and Savich all are tied for 82nd at 159.
No. 2 Alabama grabbed the top position in the team standings with a 3-over 291 that put the Tide at 1-over 577. No. 5 Purdue is second at 581, followed by the Bulldogs at 585, No. 4 Duke at 587, Notre Dame at 588, Ohio State at 589, No. 7 Virginia at 590, No. 16 Wake Forest and No. 18 Auburn both at 591 and No. 12 Arkansas and No. 22 Michigan State at 592.
"I talked before we went out there today about the fact that it was going to be really windy, it was going to be difficult and we were going to get bad breaks and make mistakes," Alabama coach Mic Potter said. "But the important thing was for them to recover as well as they could, play one shot at a time. And they all did a great job at that. All you can ever do in golf is do your best on every shot. Not let your past and future affect what you do in the present.
"I love (the format)," Potter added. "For coaches to have the opportunity to see all your girls play together at the same time, start to understand why things happen the way they do. Seeing the ups and downs, peaks and valleys is really beneficial to us in helping them improve in moving forward."
The final round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, 30 minutes earlier than originally planned.
