ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia doubles team of senior Javier Garrapiz and freshman Hernus Pieters continued its ascent in the national rankings, moving up to No. 5 in the April 19 edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.
The pair's previous high was the No. 6 ranking they attained on March 1 and they are up three spots from last week.
Garrapiz and Pieters have won their last eight doubles matches, including last Saturday's upset over top-ranked J.P. Smith and Boris Conkic of Tennessee by an 8-3 score. The duo is 25-5 overall in 2010-11 and 15-5 at the No. 1 spot in dual matches, notching 11 wins over ranked opponents. They are 9-2 in SEC play.
Georgia's No. 2 doubles team of Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada came in at No. 64 this week, while a trio of Bulldogs are ranked in singles including Wil Spencer (18), Garrapiz (31), and Doumbia (52).
The Bulldogs maintained their No. 5 team ranking this week after closing the regular-season with a record of 19-4 (10-1) and claiming their 33rd overall SEC championship. Virginia remained No. 1, while Tennessee jumped two spots to No. 2 and Southern Cal and Ohio State occupied the next two spots in front of Georgia. Texas A&M, Baylor, Stanford, UCLA, and Pepperdine completed the top 10.
Georgia will head to the 2011 SEC Championships this week in Gainesville, Fla.
