ATHENS-----No. 11 Georgia completed its four-match homestand to start the season with a 7-0 win over USC Upstate Wednesday at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility.
The Bulldogs are now 4-0 this season, while USC Upstate drops to 0-4. Georgia will play its first road match of the season Sunday at No. 4 Ohio State.
"I thought we played a clean match and came focused and played solid," head coach Manuel Diaz said. "We have a couple of days to get ready for one of our toughest matches of the year at Ohio State. Going up to Columbus will let us measure where we are and it will be a great experience for the guys."
Georgia cruised in the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Drake Bernstein and Wil Spencer blanked Gianluca Paino and Ignacio Velez 8-0 at No. 1, then 23rd-ranked Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada clinched the point at No. 2 with an 8-1 win. The 14th-ranked team of Javier Garrapiz and Hernus Pieters closed out the doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 1.
In singles, Taboada beat Ramiro Blanco 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, and Georgia extended its lead to 3-0 when Bernstein beat Marco Linconir, 6-1, 6-1.
Bulldog freshman Hernus Pieters recorded his first match clincher at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Matias Di Pasquale. No. 47 Doumbia played at No. 1 for the first time this season and won easily, 6-1, 6-1 over Gonzalo Blanco.
Two more freshmen, Garrett Brasseaux and Campbell Johnson, recorded wins in their first career dual matches. Brasseaux downed Andres Sanchez, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Johnson closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. The match lasted just two hours, 42 minutes.
The Bulldogs and Buckeyes will play Sunday at noon Eastern.
