SEATTLE --- The No. 14-seed University of Georgia men's tennis team defeated No. 11 Louisville by a 4-1 score Saturday afternoon in the consolation draw of the ITA National Indoors at the Seattle Tennis Club.
The Bulldogs avenged yesterday's 4-2 heartbreaker to Tennessee, improving to 6-3 on the season and dropping the Cardinals to 8-3.
"We had some opportunities yesterday but just came up short," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "Our guys fought hard and played hard, and today we had a challenging match against Louisville. They are ranked ahead of us and our guys responded. They came out determined and ready to play. We looked pretty good in doubles, then went on and earned three more wins in singles and put them away. Louisville is coming to Athens later this spring and will provide another great match for us at home on our courts outdoors. It was really a solid performance from our guys today."
Georgia snagged the doubles point to rush out to an early 1-0 lead with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. First off was the No. 2 team of 41st-ranked Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada, who defeated No. 50 Simon Childs and Andrew Carter 8-3. At No. 3, No. 37 Drake Bernstein and Wil Spencer defeated Alejandro Calligari and Amaury Derognat, 9-7 to clinch it and improve to 7-1 in dual matches.
No. 1 doubles was suspended in a tiebreaker.
Georgia's lead increased to 2-0 when the freshman Pieters won his second match of the tournament in straight sets, going 6-3, 6-2 over Dante Terenzio to move to 5-2. The Bulldogs went up 3-0 when 12th-ranked Spencer bested No. 100 Maksimcuk, 7-5, 6-3, improving his singles record to 4-3. Georgia's lone setback of the day came at No. 1 singles where No. 11 Austen Childs defeated No. 24 Javier Garrapiz, 7-6(4), 6-0.
Georgia clinched at No. 5 as Taboada defeated Carter by a score of 7-5, 6-4 to improve to 5-1 in duals. Bernstein's and Doumbia's singles matches were unfinished. The clincher was Taboada's first of the season as the Bulldogs improve to 4-0 all-time vs. the Cardinals.
Georgia will take on the winner of the Southern Cal-Stanford match tomorrow at 3 p.m. E.T. at the Seattle Tennis Club. Follow the action on the Georgia Tennis Live Chat, while the host University of Washington will provide live scoring.
