ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia men's tennis junior Wil Spencer shot up to No. 12 in the latest edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I singles rankings released Monday evening. Spencer climbed 41 spots all the way from No. 53, where he started the season in the last set of individual rankings released Jan. 4.
Spencer is 20-6 on the year including a 10-4 clip against ranked opponents. He posted a seven-match winning streak earlier this season, five of which came en route to the singles title at the SEC Indoors in January - a run that featured wins over the top three seeds in the tournament and then-No. 2 ranked Eric Quigley of Kentucky.
Senior Javier Garrapiz comes in at No. 24 this week with a record of 21-6, while Sadio Doumbia jumped from No. 47 to 31 and is 6-0 to start the dual match slate now owning a team-high 22 wins in 2010-11.
In doubles, Garrapiz and freshman Hernus Pieters are No. 12, up two spots from No. 14, while Drake Bernstein and Spencer entered the poll at No. 37 after a hot 6-0 start. Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada are No. 41 as all three Bulldog doubles teams found themselves ranked.
In the team poll, Georgia fell to No. 16 following Saturday's 4-3 loss on the road at Georgia Tech.
The Bulldogs are next in action Feb. 18-21 at the ITA National Indoors in Seattle and are still awaiting the draw.
