Silva Zamora One Stroke Back In Puerto Rico

Feb. 14, 2011
RIO GRANDE, P.R. --- Marta Silva Zamora fired a 4-under 68 to climb to third on the individual leaderboard at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Monday. The junior is a stroke back of co-leaders Stephanie Meadow of Alabama and Gabriella Dominguez of Texas Tech entering Tuesday's final round.
"Marta played very well," head coach Kelley Hester said. "She was a little frustrated because the one bogey she made was from the middle of the fairway with a wedge in her hand on one of her final holes. But obviously it was a very solid round, and it's great that she's in contention once again."
The No. 10-ranked Bulldogs posted a 14-over 302 on Monday, climbing from ninth to fifth in the team standings.
"It's a good thing we're not down the stretch headed to the postseason," Hester said. "We'll continue to get the rust off and hopefully play better tomorrow."
Silva Zamora teed off from No. 8 and birdied No. 9, No. 11, No. 13, No. 15 and No. 18 to move to 5-under through 11 holes. She then carded five straight pars before her only bogey of the day at No. 6. Silva Zamora's Monday loop was the low tally for all 98 golfers in the field.
Georgia also counted a 75 from Amelia Hill, a 78 from Abby Johnson and an 81, the score posted by both Emilie Burger and Tess Fordham. Milena Savich, who is competing as an individual, shot an 82.
"I was encouraged with Amelia's play," Hester said. "She chipped and putted really well today. I was happy with Abby as well. She hung in there and gave us a counting score."
Top-ranked Alabama shot 298 and remains atop the team standings. The Crimson Tide is at 584, nine shots better than Iowa State at 593. Rounding out the top-10 teams are Florida State at 598, No. 6 Purdue at 602, the Bulldogs at 610, No. 23 Kent State and Northwestern at 612, No. 17 Oklahoma and TCU at 614 and SMU at 618.
Individually, Hill is tied for 35th at 155, Johnson is tied for 41st at 156, Burger and Fordham are both tied for 60th at 158 and Savich is tied for 79th at 161.
Tuesday's final round will begin with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available on the internet via www.golfstat.com.
