ATHENS, Ga. --- Longtime University of Georgia men’s tennis coach, sports information director, and Bulldog Club founder Dan Magill will be recognized by both houses of the Georgia Legislature this Wednesday morning, Feb. 16 at the State Capitol in honor of his 90th birthday and lifetime of service to UGA Athletics and the state.
Magill turned 90 on Jan. 25.
The Athens native graduated from the University of Georgia in 1942 with a degree in journalism and served in the Marine Corps during World War II. As the head coach of the Bulldogs from 1955-88, Magill led the men’s tennis team to two national championships with a career record of 706-183, which remains the second best record of any coach in NCAA history.
Aside from establishing Georgia men’s tennis as a perennial powerhouse, Magill was responsible for constructing the premier tennis facility in the nation and drawing the NCAA Championships to Athens year after year, including 13 straight from 1977-89.
As founder of the Bulldog Club, Magill set up clubs in every county in the state and the fundraising arm of the athletic department continues to thrive today.
Magill was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.
Today he serves as the curator of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men’s Tennis Hall of Fame, which he brought to campus, and is the chair of the selection committee. He continues to play tennis twice a week at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
