ATHENS, Ga. - Laura Malone became the newest member of the Georgia equestrian team when she signed her National Letter of Intent during the early signing period. The Mendota Heights, Minn., native is the daughter of Robert and Debra Malone and will compete on the UGA western team.
"Laura is well prepared to ride multiple levels of horses and adapt to their individual needs," assistant coach Mary Meneely said.
Training with Michael Colvin, Malone has shown exclusively in the Quarter Horse industry and was most recently crowned the 2011 All American Quarter Horse Congress 15-18 champion in Equitation. Along with her championship, she has been a finalist at the AQHYA World Show and won numerous High-Point and All-Around championships and was the Reserve Congress Champion in Horsemanship during her youth career. Malone spent the last year training and showing nationwide.
Malone has also performed at several major horse shows across the U.S., including the Georgia Big A, Reichert Celebration, AQHYA World Championships, Congress and Gold Coast circuits. She also served as the Minnesota MYQHA president.
In addition to riding, Malone was a standout student and was a member of her high school student leadership and service clubs.
"Laura has a magnetic personality and is full of determination, drive and competitiveness that will guide her successfully into her collegiate riding career," Meneely added. "I couldn't be more thrilled to have Laura become the latest member of the University of Georgia equestrian team."
