A state champion in the 800 meters and the mile while at Oconee County High School, Wallace was a member of the 2008 Georgia Bulldog cross country team. However, he began experiencing pain with his leg in 2007 and endured multiple surgeries due to compartment syndrome. Throughout the surgeries, amputation was always the final option. Ultimately, Wallace made the decision to have his right leg amputated below the knee in June of 2010. Six weeks later, Wallace was running again for the first time in four years.
Wallace is the first amputee within their first calendar year to qualify for a national event. Currently, he is Guadalajara, Mexico as a member of the U.S. Parapan American Games track and field team.
Jarryd, is the son of Jeff and Sabina Wallace. His parents are former Bulldog letter winners, Jeff in tennis and Sabina in cross-country and track and field. Jeff is in his 27th season as the women's tennis coach at UGA.
