ATHENS, Ga. --- Former Georgia gymnast Courtney Kupets is one of the finalists for the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, according to an announcement by the NCAA.
The Woman of the Year Award honors female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, community service and leadership.
Kupets is among the 10 finalists in Division I and 30 finalists overall named by a committee of representatives from various schools and conferences. This year, a record 452 nominations were submitted for the award.
Three finalists will be chosen from each division to form the nine finalists for the Woman of the Year award. The national winner will be chosen by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics. The recipient of the 20th annual award will be announced during the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year banquet Oct. 17 in Indianapolis.
Kupets was a four-year letterwinner for Georgia from 2006-09. As a senior in 2009, she led Georgia to its fifth straight NCAA title, and she won the all-around, bars, beam and floor individual competitions. She became the first gymnast ever to win a national title in all four events and received five First-Team All-America honors, making a total of 15 for her career, the maximum for competing only three years.
Kupets is the all-time NCAA leader with nine individual championships and was named 2009 SEC Athlete of the Year as well as the AAI National, NCAA Southeast Regional and SEC Gymnast of the Year. Kupets became the third Gym Dog ever to record a 10.0 in all four events, and she had seven 10.0s in 2009, including three at the NCAAs.
She was a National Honor Society member, was chosen as ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American and was a recipient of NCAA and SEC postgraduate scholarships. She was a member of the Blue Key Honor Society and a recipient of the Richard B. Russell Student Leadership Award. She won Georgia's Marilyn Vincent Award as the senior female student-athlete with the highest grade point average. Kupets graduated from Georgia in May with a degree in housing.
Georgia has had three NCAA Woman of the Year honorees: swimmers Lisa Coole in 1997, Kristy Kowal in 2000 and Kim Black in 2001.
