Burger, Georgia Post 4-Under Tallies
September 24, 2010 | Women's Golf
Sept. 24, 2010
FRANKLIN, Tenn. --- Sophomore Emilie Burger and the No. 8-ranked Georgia women's golf team carded 4-under scores in the opening round of the Mason Rudolph Championship at Vanderbilt's Legends Club on Friday. Both Burger (68) and the Bulldogs (284) are tied for fifth, two and six shots off the individual and team leads, respectively.

"It was windy today," head coach Kelley Hester said. "The conditions were not what I would consider really scoreable, but the scores overall were very good. I was pleased with the way we responded to the windy conditions. For the most part, we took advantage of the scoring opportunities we had today."

Marta Silva Zamora and Amelia Hill also recorded par-or-better efforts for Georgia on Friday. Silva Zamora posted a 2-under 70 and is tied for 17th, and Hill notched an even-par 72 and is tied for 33rd. The Bulldogs also counted a 74 from Milena Savich, who is tied for 51st, and discarded Tess Fordham's 76, which has her tied for 68th.

"We obviously had very strong rounds from Emilie and Marta," Hester said. "They both birdied their last hole, which was a good way to finish. Marta missed about six birdie putts from within 10 feet so she could've scored even better. Amelia had a steady day, and Milena was scrapping away. She had a nice birdie on No. 17."

No. 2 LSU owns a one-shot lead over No. 11 Cal and No. 20 Purdue after shooting a 10-under 278. Rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 6 Duke at 283, the Bulldogs and No. 10 UCLA at 284, No. 1 Alabama at 285 and No. 3 Southern Cal, No. 22 Florida and Wake Forest all at 286.

Wake Forest's Michelle Shin is atop the individual leaderboard following a 5-under 67. She owns a two-stoke lead over the trio of Purdue's Maude-Aimee LeBlanc, Alabama's Brooke Pancake and LSU's Tessa Teachman.

The 4-under tally comes 11 days after the Bulldogs shot a school-record 11-under 277 in their opening loop of the 2010-11 campaign at the NCAA Fall Preview.

"We've gotten out of the blocks very well in both tournaments," Hester said. "It will be fun to see how they respond tomorrow. This is the kind of golf course that you have to keep your foot on the gas. It's not like you can get in the lead and try to protect it. You have to go out and make putts and make birdies whenever you can."

Burger opened with six straight pars before a quartet of consecutive birdies from No. 7-11. She gave one of those strokes back with a bogey at No. 14 but closed with a birdie to push back to 4-under.

Silva Zamora fell to 1-over with a bogey at No. 7 but rebounded with back-to-back birdies at No. 8 and No. 9 to turn at 1-under. She remained there until a birdie at No. 18.

Hill also turned at 1-under, mixing eight pars with a birdie at No. 3. The back half was more eventful, with a double-bogey at No. 12, birdies at No. 14 and No. 16 and a bogey at No. 17.

Play continues through Sunday on the same course that will host the 2012 NCAA Championships. Live scoring is being updated on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
