Bulldog Freshmen Going For Titles At SEC Coaches Classic

Auburn, Ala.-----A trio of Georgia freshmen will play for singles titles in their respective flights Sunday at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic.

The Bulldogs went an impressive 10-1 in day two of the event held on the Auburn campus.

In the 1B flight, Georgia's Lilly Kimbell advanced to the final with a 6-2,6-2 win over Courtney McLane (Alabama). She will face South Carolina junior Anya Morgina on Sunday. In the 2B flight, Georgia's Alex Anghelescu cruised past Keill Ulery 6-4,6-0 in her semifinal contest. Up next, she will battle Ole Miss senior Laura van de Stroet. In the 3A flight, Georgia's Alina Jerjomina outlasted Auburn freshman Olivia Bennett 6-3,6-7(1),6-1 to reach the final. She will face Florida sophomore Caroline Hitimana on Sunday. Jerjomina and freshman Rachael Hart won the flight four doubles crown Saturday.

"It was a pretty stout day for us," said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. "Our freshmen had an outstanding day, and I'm pleased for them because they've been working really hard. They are getting some great experience here in their first action. We're hoping for a big showing on Sunday too."

In other singles action involving the Bulldogs Saturday, freshman Kate Fuller defeated Vanderbilt's Radeva 6-2,7-5 in the 3A flight. In 2A action, freshman Maho Kowase rallied past Chelsea Preeg (Vanderbilt) 3-6,7-6,6-3. In the 1A flight, junior Nadja Gilchrist fell to Alabama sophomore Alexa Guarachi 5-7,6-2,6-4. Senior Cameron Ellis blanked Auburn freshman Maria Arechavaleta 6-0,6-0 in the 3B flight.

In doubles, Hart and Jerjomina captured the flight four crown with an 8-4 win over Sundaram and Frampton (Arkansas. In flight one, Gilchrist and Fuller registered an 8-5 win over Florida's Hitimana and Alexandra Cercone. In flight two, Kimbell and Anghelescu defeated Vogel/Rangel (Ole Miss) 8-5. In flight three, Ellis and Kowase posted an 8-4 win over Arechavaleta/Thornton (Auburn).

The round-robin tournament at the Yarbrough Tennis Center concludes Sunday.
