WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Georgia volleyball team defeated Coastal Carolina, 3-0, in the Deacon Invitational on Saturday morning. The Bulldogs return to action Saturday evening against tournament host Wake Forest at 7 p.m. ET.
Georgia (2-0) posted the shutout over Coastal Carolina (0-2) with set scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-17, and a key to the Bulldogs' victory came in the service game where they posted 14 aces while the Chanticleers were held without an ace. UGA's 14 aces were the most in match since Sept. 4, 2007, when the Bulldogs recorded 14 against USC Upstate. Freshman Brittany Northcutt led the charge on serve with seven aces, one ace shy of tying the Georgia match record of eight.
"The match at 10 a.m. came pretty early for us this morning, so I was really impressed with the girls coming out strong," Georgia head coach Joel McCartney said. "The stats will show that we weren't quite as sharp with our game as last night, but what the stats won't show is how well we played together in the tense moments of this match."
Junior middle hitter Ann Dylla led Georgia with nine kills and six blocks as the Bulldogs combined to record 41 kills on a .216 clip with 10 team blocks. Northcutt was second in the match with seven kills to along with her seven aces, and junior setter Kathleen Gates added six kills while leading the offense with 28 assists. Supporting the defensive performance, junior libero Carla Tietz turned in a match-best 17 digs.
"We defended our side of the court really well and I was especially impressed with Ann and Carla," McCartney noted. "We served really tough today as well and did a much better job of taking advantage of the aggressive side of our game in that area."
