Sadio Doumbia To Transfer To Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. --- Sadio Doumbia, a top-10 NAIA player at Auburn University Montgomery, will transfer to UGA and continue his collegiate tennis career with the Bulldogs, head coach Manuel Diaz announced Monday.

Doumbia, a native of Borderes, France, will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in the fall of 2010.

“We’re very happy to have Sadio join us,” Diaz said. “He’ll be a great addition to what I think is an already great group of players. This group is going to go a long way to get us back in the hunt for a national championship in the coming years.”

Doumbia finished the 2010 season ranked No. 6 nationally in the NAIA. He was preseason No. 14 and was ranked has high as No. 5 during the regular season. Doumbia played at Nos. 1 and 2 and was named first team All-American and he helped lead the Senators to the NAIA National Championship with a 21-1 singles record. He also claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Armstrong Atlantic’s Miik Irdoja, who finished the season ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II.

As a freshman in 2009, he played at Nos. 3 and 4 for AUM and compiled an 11-1 record. Doumbia was in the French federation program for eight years and was a top-five junior player in France.

Doumbia was also named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team and has been named to the Dean’s List three times at AUM with an overall grade point average of 3.85.
