ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia's Russell Henley is the 2010 recipient of the Fred Haskins Award, which is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding collegiate golfer.

Henley, who recently completed his junior season with the Bulldogs, was given the award by the Country Club of Columbus (Ga.) after a nationwide vote of college golfers, coaches and media. The award has been presented annually for 39 years, and Henley is the first Georgia recipient. The announcement of the award came Thursday at the Southeastern Amateur Golf Tournament in Columbus.

"All awards are nice, but this is a big one," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "This is the oldest award in the nation for college golfers, and it means so much because it's voted on by your peers as well as coaches and media members. Russell put together a memorable season, and it's nice to see him recognized this way."

Previous recipients include three-time winners Ben Crenshaw and Phil Mickelson as well as Tiger Woods, David Duval, Curtis Strange, Justin Leonard, Stewart Cink, Luke Donald, Charles Howell III and Billy Mayfair. The trophy bearing the engraved names of all the winners resides at the Columbus Country Club, where Haskins was the club's professional from 1922-52.

Also Thursday, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Henley and Georgia teammate Harris English have been named tot he 2010 All-Nicklaus Team. Named for Jack Nicklaus, the team recognizes the nation's top players in Divisions I, II and III as well as NAIA and NJCAA. Georgia was the only school with multiple honorees.

On Wednesday, Henley was chosen as the National Player of the Year by Golfweek. Henley won four times in 2009-10, including the Southeastern Conference Championship and the NCAA South Central Regional, and earned SEC Player of the Year honors. English, a junior from Thomasville, garnered medalist honors at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate and the Olympia Fields Invitational, and he was chosen as a First-Team All-SEC performer by the league's coaches.
