UGA To Host NCAA Softball Super Regional

May 24, 2010 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia has been named one of eight host sites for the 2010 NCAA Division I Softball Championship Super Regionals.

The No. 6 National Seed for the NCAA Softball Championships, Georgia (46-11) was one of 16 teams to advance to the Super Regional round of play by winning the Athens Regional with a perfect 3-0 mark. Georgia will square off against No. 11 National Seed California (44-17), who won the Columbus Regional, also with a 3-0 record.

The Bulldogs and Golden Bears will play a best-of-three game series at the UGA Softball Stadium this weekend. Game one of the series will be played Friday at 2 p.m. ET. Game two will then be played on Saturday at 12 p.m., and game three, if necessary, will be played Saturday at 2:30 p.m. All Super Regionals will be broadcasted on national television on the ESPN network, and updated TV broadcast information will be posted as it is made available.

In the Athens Regional, Georgia posted a 10-4 win over Elon, defeated Florida State, 5-2, and clinched the Regional by defeating Radford, 8-1.

In the Columbus Regional, California run-ruled Bucknell, 10-0, in five innings, defeated Kentucky, 1-0, and earned the Regional title with a 7-0 victory over Ohio State.

Georgia and California have only met once previously in softball. That meeting came in 1999 in the Arizona State University Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Phoenix, and the Golden Bears won that contest, 3-0.

The Bulldogs are playing in their ninth-consecutive and ninth overall NCAA Softball Championship and will be making their third-straight Super Regional appearance. After going 3-0 in this year's regional round of play, Georgia's all-time NCAA postseason record stands at 32-16.

Each of the eight Super Regional winners will earn a spot in the 27th NCAA Division I Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City June 3-9. Georgia will be vying to make its second appearance in the WCWS after advancing to Oklahoma City for the first time in school history last season.
