Georgia Faces Harvard Friday in NCAA Opening Round

The 19th-ranked University of Georgia women's tennis team will face Harvard in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Friday, May 14 at 10 a.m. in Clemson, S.C. The Bulldogs (12-8) are a 17-32 seed and will travel for the early rounds for the first time since 2006. Harvard (14-7) is ranked 39th nationally. Ninth-ranked Clemson (22-5) is the ninth seed and will serve as a host and will go up against College of Charleston (20-9) who is ranked 67th. The winners meet in the second round Saturday at 1 p.m.

  • The Bulldogs (12-8) earned an at-large bid to this year's NCAA Championships, and they will be making their 24th consecutive NCAA appearance under head coach Jeff Wallace.
  • Georgia has a 57-21 record in the NCAA Tournament with national titles in 1994 and 2000.
  • Georgia is 2-1 all-time versus Harvard, 21-18 against Clemson and 7-5 against College of Charleston.
  • In the last meeting with the Crimson, Harvard posted a 4-3 win over Georgia at the 2006 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. The Bulldogs fell 4-3 to Clemson indoors earlier this season in Athens.
  • The 16 second-round winners from the various campus sites advance to the University of Georgia for the round of 16-through the finals to compete for the national championship. Also, UGA will play host to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship.
  • Sophomores Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist earned at-large bids to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
  • Gullickson is ranked 12th nationally in singles and eighth in doubles with Gilchrist. A Palm Beach Gardens native, Gullickson owns a 24-8 singles record this year and 20-6 in doubles with Gilchrist. Gullickson will be a 9-16 seed in singles and a 5-8 seed in doubles. It is the second singles and doubles bid for both Bulldogs. Last year in the 2009 NCAA Tennis Championships in College Station, Texas, Gullickson reached the semifinals of the singles. In doubles, the duo fell in the first round, and Gilchrist did the same in singles. Gilchrist, a native of Webster, N.Y., is ranked 48th nationally in singles with a 20-11 record.
  • Congratulations goes out to a pair of Bulldog seniors in Naoko Ueshima (Advertising) and Lara Fakhoury (Consumer Journalism) as they took part in graduation ceremonies this past Saturday.
  • Sophomores Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist along with senior Yvette Hyndman earned All-SEC honors while junior Cameron Ellis was named to the SEC Community Service Team. Gullickson and Gilchrist were selected to the All-SEC First Team for the second year in a row by the league coaches and Hyndman made the All-SEC Second Team. Hyndman is a four-time All-SEC selection. She was named to the First Team in 2007 and 2008 and Second Team in 2009.
