ATHENS, Ga. --- Sixteen-year coaching veteran Steve Holeman, who led Ole Miss to its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009, has been named head women’s soccer coach at the University of Georgia, Athletics Director Damon Evans announced Friday.
Holeman, the fourth head coach at Georgia since the program’s inception in 1995, arrives in Athens after spending the previous 15 years at Ole Miss. He was also head coach at Auburn in 1993 and has a career record of 165-124-31.
He guided the Rebels to the NCAA Tournament with a 13-6-2 record in 2009 and a third place finish in the Southeastern Conference with a 7-2-2 mark. Ole Miss is one of only two teams in the league that has qualified for the SEC Tournament in each of the last 13 seasons, and over the last five years the Rebels compiled a 19-1-5 record against SEC West opponents.
“I would like to thank Damon Evans, Craig White and the entire search committee for entrusting a program with such a high caliber to myself,” Holeman said. “Georgia is certainly one of the premier programs and universities in the entire country. We are thrilled and excited to get underway.”
In addition to the four NCAA Tournament appearances under Holeman’s direction, Ole Miss won three SEC Western Division titles and made an appearance in the SEC Tournament Finals in 1999. The four NCAA Tournament appearances (2002, 2003, 2005, 2009) include a trip to the second round in 2003 when the Rebels defeated the Texas Longhorns.
“We are thrilled to have Steve as our new soccer coach,” Evans said. “He is a winner and knows what it takes to be successful on the field and in the classroom. We are very excited about the direction Steve will take our soccer program.”
Holeman produced 29 All-SEC selections for the Rebels, and had at least one all-league player every year since 1996. Under Holeman, Ole Miss players were among the nation's elite in the classroom with eight Academic/Scholar All-America honorees and 33 Academic All-Region selections. The Rebels received the NSCAA Team Academic Award six of the past nine years.
In addition to his duties at Ole Miss, Holeman has served on the staff at the Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He was head coach of the South Region team at the U.S. Soccer Festival in 2001-02, and guided them to a gold medal finish at the 2001 event in Chicago.
A native of West Long Branch, N.J., Holeman graduated from Wake Forest in 1990 with a degree in health and sports science. He earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology at Auburn in 1993 and has also successfully completed coursework toward a doctorate degree in exercise physiology.
He is married to the former Julie Newton, and they have a daughter, five-year old Anna Mae, and a son, one-year old Robert (Bo) Stephen.
