Men's Tennis Tops Arkansas, Stays Perfect In SEC

ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 6 Georgia men’s tennis team shut out Arkansas by a 6-0 score on Sunday afternoon, playing indoors at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility due to inclement weather. The Bulldogs improve to 13-3 and are a perfect 5-0 in conference play. They also move to 10-1 at home this spring.
The Razorbacks dropped to 9-8 with the loss.
Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz got the 501st win of his career to push him into fifth place all-time in the record books at UGA as Georgia was able to bounce back from its tough loss to Southern Cal on Friday
Georgia is now a staggering 50 for its last 52 in regular-season SEC contests.
“Nate [Schnugg] I thought played one of his best matches of the year today, particularly in the second set,” Diaz said. “He didn’t hold back, played instinctively. Javy [Garrapiz] also had a good match.”
“We had a great couple practices and talks since USC and have been able to really turn that into a positive.”
Georgia started the day by capturing the doubles point in a tightly contested trio of matches. At No. 2, Drake Bernstein and Javier Garrapiz went down 3-0 before rallying to tie it at three against Arkansas’ Bradwin Williams and Taylor King. The score would be tied again at 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6 before the Georgia pair broke to take a 7-6 lead and held serve to pull it out by an 8-6 score. The win improved Bernstein and Garrapiz to 13-7 on the year.
At that point, the other two doubles matches were both knotted at 6-6. The No. 1 team of Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt then secured the next two points to win their match, 8-6, over Christopher Nott and Nikolas Zogaj to clinch the point, moving to 15-7 on the season. The No. 3 team of Bo Seal and Christian Vitulli had been down 7-6 and fought to tie it at seven. They were down 8-7 to Mike Ward and Matt Walters before the match was suspended.
Georgia then won three straight singles matches to clinch. No. 18 Garrapiz was first off at No. 2 singles, as he defeated Zogaj by a score of 6-0, 6-2 to improve to 9-6 in dual matches. At No. 3 singles, Hunt stormed past Walters with straight-set scores of 6-1, 6-3 to give the Bulldogs the 3-0 lead as he moves to 11-2, and 10-2 when playing at three.
The clincher came from Seal at No. 4, who bounced back from a 4-0 deficit in the first set to win 7-5, 6-3 over Ward to jump to 7-5 on the season.
The teams played out the remaining matches, including Schnugg’s No. 1 match, which spanned over two and a half hours. There, the 96th-ranked Schnugg came away with a hard-fought win over the Razorbacks’ No. 49 Nott, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (6) to keep Georgia perfect on the day. Schnugg moves to 9-6 in dual play and evens at 4-4 when playing at No. 1.
At No. 5 singles, Bernstein earned a quick 6-3, 6-0 win over King to improve to 10-4, while Will Oliver’s match at six singles was suspended after Oliver won the first set 6-3 and trailed Williams, 3-0, in the second.
“Their guys really came ready today and so did we,” Hunt said. “We were looking to bounce back after the USC match and were able to do that. We came in ready and focused.”
The Bulldogs are now 21-2 all-time versus Arkansas.
Georgia will close out its six-match homestand on Thurs., March 25 when it hosts the 2009 NCAA runner-up Ohio State at 3 p.m.
