Hooker's Two Goals Lift Georgia Over Furman

ATHENS, Ga. --- Rising junior Alex Hooker scored two goals to lift the Georgia soccer team to a 2-1 win over Furman at the UGA Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
It was the third game of the spring for the Bulldogs (1-1-1) and the first of four home games. Saturday’s game was also the first for interim head coach Robin Confer. Confer, an assistant on the Georgia staff since 2005, is stepping in for Patrick Baker, who resigned Thursday due to personal, family and health concerns.
“I’m proud of the way the girls have responded over the last couple of days,” Confer said. “They have been very resilient. Part of being a strong team is getting through adversity and they were great today. I’m really proud of them. We are behind coach Baker and we want what’s best for him and his family. We have to move forward as a program, and today was the first step.”
Hooker gave Georgia a 1-0 lead with her first goal in the 11th minute, but the Paladins tied it just over eight minutes later on a goal by Martha Hall.
The Bulldogs scored again off a set piece as rising junior Bailey Powell found Hooker who connected on the game-winner in the 40th minute.
Georgia had a chance to add to its lead with 17:45 remaining, but Sarah Jordan’s penalty kick deflected off the left post. Furman never threatened over the final minutes as Georgia earned its first win of the spring.
“We created some great chances in the second half with some exciting soccer,” Confer said. “We had a slow start in the first half, but the response in the second half was great. Alex Hooker was great for us today. We’re going to build off this and keep doing the things we’ve been doing.”
The Bulldogs outshot Furman, 19-7, including nine shots on goal to just two for the Paladins. The two teams played two, 40-minute halves, and redshirt sophomore Ashley Baker played all 80 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs.
Georgia returns to action March 27 at 10 a.m. with a doubleheader against Tennessee and South Carolina.
