Georgia Golfers Continue Season In Las Vegas
March 10, 2010 | Men's Golf
ATHENS, Ga. --- Fresh off its first victory of the season, the Georgia men’s golf team will travel to Las Vegas this weekend for the 2010 Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.
The Bulldogs will play Southern Highlands Golf Club’s par-72, 7,510-yard layout Friday through Sunday. Georgia and host UNLV will help make up a field that features 11 teams from the Top 25.
“The Las Vegas tournament is always one of the best events of the season,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “The golf course is very challenging and the teams that compete there are some of the best in the country. Las Vegas gives you a barometer of where your team is heading into the meat of the schedule. We’ll have to play well to put ourselves in position to contend. But that’s OK. We like the challenge.”
Haack will use a lineup of seniors Rob Bennett, Harris English and Russell Henley, and freshmen Bryden Macpherson and T.J. Mitchell. English and Henley are the only players in this week’s lineup who have played at Southern Highlands.
The field for the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters is made up of No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Florida, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 12 UCLA, No. 13 Georgia, No. 15 Georgia Tech, No. 16 Texas Tech, No. 18 Southern Cal and No. 19 UNLV as well as Arizona, New Mexico, TCU and Tennessee.
Play will begin each day with tee times off Nos. 1 and 10 starting at 11 a.m. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
Georgia enters the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters riding the momentum of its victory at the Charleston Shootout. The Bulldogs finished at 18-under 846 (the third-best figure in school history) and claimed a 20-shot victory over the College of Charleston. Henley earned medalist honors at 9-under 207 for his second win of the year and the fourth of his career. He picked up SEC Golfer of the Week honors following the tournament.
After the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, the Bulldogs will have just two events remaining before the SEC Championship April 16-18 on St. Simons Island. Georgia then will play in an NCAA Regional May 20-22 in an attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championship June 1-5. This year’s NCAAs will take place in Ooltewah, Tenn.
