Gym Dogs Fall To Florida By A Tenth

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Despite posting its second-highest score of the season, seventh-ranked Georgia fell to No. 4 Florida, 197.250-197.150, Friday at the O’Connell Center.
The Gym Dogs’ 197.150 is the sixth-highest total score by any team this season. Georgia has two of the nation’s six highest scores this year including a 197.200 against Kentucky on Feb. 5.
The 197.150 is Georgia's highest score at an SEC road meet since 2007 and the second highest in the last six years.
The Gym Dogs (3-4, 2-3 SEC) trailed by just a tenth of a point entering the final rotation, but Florida (5-2, 4-1) sealed the win with a 49.450 on floor and snapped a nine-dual meet regular season losing streak to Georgia in Gainesville dating back to 1990.
“This Florida team is the best team we have seen this season,” said Georgia head coach Jay Clark. “I think they will be right there at the end of the season, and we will be in there too. We made some little errors tonight that were aggressive mistakes. We don’t make any excuses, and we can get better. We’re not happy about losing; we win at Georgia. But to go 197.150 and have our first complete road meet was big. This team can win a championship.”
Florida took a 49.400-49.175 lead after the first rotation. Georgia was led on bars by Kat Ding with a 9.875, which tied for the meet’s highest bars score. Ding has now won the bars title in six of seven meets this season. Grace Taylor competed on bars for the second time in as many meets and posted a 9.850.
The Gym Dogs inched closer to Florida with a season-best 49.250 on vault in the second rotation. Ding again led Georgia with a season team and individual high of 9.925. In the anchor position, Marcia Newby followed Ding with a 9.875, which tied for the third highest vault score of the season. Florida posted a 49.200 on bars and led 98.600-98.425 at the end of the second rotation. Georgia’s 98.425 set the mark for its highest score at the end of two rotations this season.
The Gym Dogs cut into Florida’s lead again with a 49.275 in the third rotation on floor. Georgia’s first three gymnasts posted season-highs: Noel Couch scored a 9.825, then Hilary Mauro and Gina Nuccio each scored a 9.875. Courtney McCool finished the event with a 9.900, and Florida’s lead was 147.800-147.700 entering the final rotation.
On beam, Mauro tied her season-high 9.900 in the No. 2 spot, then Worley also scored a 9.900. McCool finished off the meet for Georgia with a season-high 9.975. After McCool’s routine, Florida needed a 9.850 to win the meet, and Ashanee Dickerson scored a 9.925. McCool won her sixth beam title of the season, and Georgia scored a 49.450, tied for the highest score on any event this season.
“We have to correct some little mistakes here and there,” McCool said. “We really have to tighten up on those. Today was a great day for us, but it’s going to get even greater.”
The meet will be shown on ESPNU Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. Georgia’s next meet is Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. against No. 11 LSU at Stegeman Coliseum.
