Georgia Freshmen Claim Doubles Title

WACO, TEXAS-----Georgia's top-seeded freshmen Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase captured the doubles title at the HEB Baylor Invitational Sunday.
They won four matches en route to the title, culminating with an 8-6 win over the No. 2 seeds, the TCU tandem of Federica Denti and Katariina Tuohimaa.
"Lilly and Maho worked together on the courts throughout the tournament," said associate head coach Frank Polito. "They kept the ball low on their returns, lobbed well and that was some of the keys to their success. Today, they were down the whole match until it was 6-5, then TCU came back to tie it at 6-6, and then they played some great tennis to close it out."
Polito added that he was pleased with how the Georgia contingent competed in the final tournament of the fall season.
Kowase had a chance to claim the singles crown here too. In the quarterfinals, she ousted the top seed in senior Rebekka Hänle (Rice), who is ranked No. 57 nationally. Kowase beat her 6-4,6-4 and then dispatched the No. 3 seed Tuohimaa (TCU) 6-0,6-2 to advance to the final. However, Karolina Filipiak (Baylor) won the singles title with a 7-5,7-5 decision over her. Kowase concludes the fall with a team-best 13-5 singles record.
To recap the rest of Georgia's showing here this weekend, freshman Alexandra Anghelescu made it to the singles quarterfinals before being eliminated Sunday. She beat Aya Bara (Baylor) 6-4,6-1 in the round of 16 and then fell to Samantha Adams (Texas Tech) 6-2,7-5. Filipiak outlasted Kimbell in the round of 16 late Saturday, winning 4-6,6-4,6-3. Georgia senior Cameron Ellis went 1-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles with Anghelescu.
Georgia freshmen Kate Fuller and Alina Jerjomina were in Palm Springs, California competing in the Duals in the Desert tournament against players from UCLA and USC. A complete recap of this event will be available Monday.
The Bulldogs will return to the courts for the indoor season starting with the Georgia Invitational in Athens Jan. 14-16.
