PALO ALTO, Calif. --- The No. 7-ranked Georgia women's golf team posted a second-straight 9-over 293 at the PAC 10-SEC Challenge on Saturday. The Bulldogs enter the final round at the Stanford University Golf Course in 11th but just five shots out of fifth.
"I think we're within striking distance of fifth which, given the field, you'd feel good about taking," head coach Kelly Hester said.
The tournament features 21 of 22 schools from the conferences, including seven top-10 teams and four additional top-25 units.
Georgia teed off from No. 10 and played the back half of the course first on Saturday. The Bulldogs struggled early, turning at 9-over and slipping to 13-over through 15 holes before playing Nos. 7-9 at 4-under.
"We played much better on the second side, which was the front half for us today," Hester said. "We gained a few coming in. Obviously, you're not thrilled with 9-over, but you don't mind it when you're 9-over at the turn. Hopefully, we can take some of the good stuff we had coming in, build on that and keep the positive energy tomorrow."
Marta Silva Zamora paced Georgia with a 1-under 70, her 10th par-or-better round in 11 loops played this fall.
Silva Zamora birdied No. 11 and No. 12 to quickly move to 2-under but turned at 1-over after bogeys at No. 13, No. 15 and No. 17. She birdied No. 1 to get back to par and used a birdie at No. 7 to return to red numbers.
Rounding out the Bulldogs' counting tallies were a pair of 74s from Abby Johnson and Milena Savich and a 75 from Amelia Hill. Emilie Burger's 76 was the dropped score.
"Abby has stepped in and played well," Hester said. "Milena improved, which I knew she would. She just had a weird day yesterday, which we all have some times."
No. 5 UCLA shot 2-under 281 to push its one-shot lead after 18 holes to nine strokes entering the final round. No. 3 Alabama and Auburn are tied for second at 575, followed by No. 13 Arizona at 578, No. 4 Cal at 581, Washington and Stanford at 582, No. 12 Arkansas and No. 21 Tennessee at 584, No. 2 Southern Cal at 585 and the Bulldogs at 586.
Vanderbilt's Marina Alex shot 1-under 70 to move to 6-under 136 and atop the individual leaderboard. She leads Auburn's Cydney Clanton by a shot.
Individually for Georgia, Silva Zamora is fourth at 139, Johnson is tied for 27th at 147, Burger is tied for 49th at 150, Hill is tied for 60th at 152 and Savich is tied for 92nd at 159.
