Georgia Freshmen Duo Advances To Quarterfinals

WACO, TEXAS-----Georgia's top-seeded freshmen tandem of Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase cruised in to the quarterfinals of the HEB Baylor Invitational Friday.
After a first round bye, they posted an 8-4 win over the Rice team of Ana Guzman and Daniella Trigo. On Saturday, they will face the North Texas duo of Paula Dinuta and Amy Joubert. Meanwhile, Georgia's other doubles team of Cameron Ellis and Alexandra Anghelescu, went 1-1 Friday. They won their first round match 8-4 over Natalia Mayuk and Daiana Negreanu (Texas-Arlington) but then lost in the round of 16 to Mariayeni Gutierrez and Kaltrina Harbuzi (Lamar).
In singles, Kimbell, Kowase and Anghelescu had first round byes as seeded players. Ellis advanced to the round of 32 with a 6-0,6-2 victory over Shalini Sahoo (TCU). Then, she was eliminated by Dinuta (North Texas) 4-6,6-4,10-4. In lieu of a third set, they opted to play a 10-point match tiebreaker. The rest of the Bulldog contingent had late second round matches Friday.
Ellis has a team-best 10-3 singles record this fall. She had her finest tournament as a Bulldog last month when she advanced to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional in Athens. She posted four wins during the event including three over ranked opponents.
Georgia freshmen Kate Fuller and Alina Jerjomina are in Palm Springs, California competing in the Duals in the Desert tournament against players from UCLA and USC. A complete recap of this event will be available Monday.
