ATHENS----The University of Georgia women's tennis team will wrap up the fall tournament season this weekend with four members competing in Texas and a pair going to California.
Bulldog senior Cameron Ellis along with freshmen Alexandra Anghelescu, Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase will be in Waco for the HEB Baylor Invitational. A singles and doubles tournament, it will feature student-athletes from 11 different schools. Georgia's four entries will play singles, and the doubles combinations will be Ellis-Anghelescu and Kimbell-Kowase. Ellis has a team-best 9-2 singles record this fall. Kowase is 9-4 while Kimbell is 6-4 and Anghelescu is 5-3. In doubles, the Ellis-Anghelescu team is 2-1 while Kimbell-Kowase is 0-1.
As seeded players, Anghelescu (No. 2), Kimbell (No. 4) and Kowase (No. 6) have first-round byes in the field of 64. Ellis will face junior Shalini Sahoo (TCU) in the first round. Ellis is coming off her finest tournament as a Bulldog when she advanced to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional last month in Athens. She posted four wins during the event including three over ranked opponents.
The top seed in singles is senior Rebekka Hänle of Rice, and she is ranked No. 57 nationally. The Kimbell/Kowase duo is seeded No. 1, and they have a first round bye in the 32-team doubles field.
Meanwhile in Palm Springs, freshmen Alina Jerjomina and Kate Fuller will be playing singles and doubles in the Duals in the Desert Tournament starting Friday and continuing through Sunday. Student-athletes from UCLA and USC are slated to play in this event. Jerjomina is 7-4 this fall while Fuller is 4-3. They are 0-1 as a doubles team. Results from this tournament will be available Monday.
"This will be our final opportunity to get on the courts this fall, and we'll be facing some excellent competition at both tournaments," said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace who will accompany Jerjomina and Fuller in California. (Georgia associate head coach Frank Polito will be with the Bulldogs traveling to Baylor.) "We've played some very good singles matches. We're still trying out different combinations in doubles to get ready for the rest of the season," Wallace added.
