Dogs Face St. Louis in Road Opener
  • Georgia takes to the road for the first time of the 2010-11 season this Saturday when it faces Atlantic 10 Conference foe St. Louis. The Bulldogs arrive at this game with a 2-0 record, having defeated Mississippi Valley State and Colorado in Athens, the latter by an 83-74 tally four nights ago.

A win Saturday would give Georgia its first 3-0 start since the 2007-08 season. The program's best start in the past 15 years was a 5-0 record in the 2001-02 season, a year that eventually produced an 11-1 pre-conference slate and a 22-10 mark overall.

  • Georgia has accrued wins in its first two outings despite playing without the Bulldogs' top returning scorer & rebounder, pre-season SEC Player of the Year Trey Thompkins. The 6-10 junior suffered a high sprain of his right ankle on Oct. 30 and, three weeks later, still has no clear timetable for a return to action.
  • In Thompkins' absence, the Bulldogs have coalesced around a trio of experienced, double-figure scorers. Junior guard Gerald Robinson, in his first season for Georgia after transferring from Tennessee State, leads the Dogs in scoring at 20 points per contest. Senior forward Jeremy Price, a career 7-points-per-game scorer, is off to a quick start at an 18.5 average, while pre-season All-SEC swingman Travis Leslie is close behind at 17.5 points per game.

Georgia vs. St. Louis

Saturday's game is just the second all-time meeting between Georgia and Saint Louis in basketball. The Bulldogs won last year's first-ever meeting 64-56 on Dec. 2 in Athens. For Georgia, the win represented the first major step in the right direction under new coach Mark Fox after an unsteady 3-2 start to the season. Details and a boxscore from that contest follow below.

Georgia vs. the A-10

  • Georgia teams have only a minimal history against the current membership of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The St. Louis game last year, in fact, marked the first time an A-10 team had ever visited Athens, discounting a 1983 visit to then-Georgia Coliseum by Xavier, which did not join its current league until 1995.
  • Bulldog teams have compiled a 9-5 all-time record against A-10 teams. That breaks down to 0-1 vs. Dayton; 0-1 vs. Duquesne; 1-0 vs. Fordham; 3-2 vs. LaSalle; 1-0 vs. Rhode Island; 1-0 vs. Richmond; 1-0 vs. St. Louis; 1-0 vs. Temple; and 1-1 vs. Xavier.
  • Ironically, the Bulldogs could play two more A-10 teams this season. They're slated to play host to Xavier on Feb. 8. They could also face Tempe next week in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando.
Noteworthy...
  • Senior forward Jeremy Price is coming off the two best consecutive scoring games of his career. His 20 points in the opener against Mississippi Valley State -- just the second time in 94 collegiate games he's reached that mark -- were followed by 17 on Tuesday against Colorado.
  • Saturday's game starts a particularly challenging stretch of the pre-conference schedule for Georgia. Five of the Bulldogs' next six games will be away from Athens. Perhaps the only tougher portion of the 2011 schedule comes at the outset of their SEC slate. Their first seven conference games begin & end with Kentucky and, in between, include three 2010 NCAA Tournament foes, and two others from last year's NIT.
  • Road wins have been as rare as gold nuggets for Georgia in recent seasons. The program's last victory on an opponent's home court, in fact, came on March 4, 2009 in a 90-85 decision over, ironically, Kentucky. Ironic because Georgia has just won in Lexington just five times in 59 tries.
  • The 79 total foul shots attempted by Georgia (43) and Colorado (36) on Tuesday night were the most combined in a Georgia game in almost eight years. The 2003 Bulldogs and Vanderbilt shot a total of 82 free throws on Feb. 11, 2003 in a game won 83-70 by Georgia. The 56 total fouls by Georgia and Colorado were the most in a UGA game since the 2007 Bulldogs and Auburn tallied up 70 personal fouls between them.
Leftovers from the Opener

In its season opener, Georgia stood at the threshold of a crushing loss to a determined squad from Mississippi Valley State. The Delta Devils led by seven with just 3:35 left to play.

Thanks to Jeremy Price and a series of clutch plays by his teammates, the Bulldogs came back and prevailed for a season-opening victory.

  • Miss. Valley State shot 59 percent in making 10 baskets from beyond the 3-point stripe. That's better than any of Georgia's 31 opponents from last season. The Delta Devils also did something that only one opponent last season did against Georgia: outrebound the Bulldogs by double digits.
  • Junior wing Travis Leslie did something he did just twice in all of last season: got a double-double.
