ATHENS, Ga. --- Jared Markham of Centennial, Colo., and Nicholas Fink of Morristown, N.J., have signed national letters of intent with Georgia, according to head swimming coach Jack Bauerle.
"We are excited about having them join our program," Bauerle said. "They are excellent young men and they are excellent swimmers. Both of them have great work ethics. Jared is one of the most talented and accomplished swimmers coming out. He's a versatile swimmer who's good at a lot of things. Nic is one of the top breaststrokers coming out. He's an up-and-comer. They've got a viable shot at helping us next year individually and on relays."
Markham attends Cherry Creek High School and he swims for Scott Cummings for the Greenwood Tiger Sharks. Earlier this year, Markham broke USA Swimming's national age group record in the 200 backstroke. He is the first 16-year-old ever to break 1:44. Markham has represented the United States on the National Youth Team in Sweden, Germany and Spain. He is on USA Swimming's all-time top 100 list for 15-16 boys in six events for short course, three events for long course and one event for 17-18 long course. As a junior, he won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke at the state meet, breaking the Colorado record in the former. He was chosen as the Colorado Male Swimmer of the Year for 2010. Markham has earned several All-America time standards.
Fink swims for the Cougar Aquatic Team in Montclair, N.J., and for The Pingry School in Martinsville, N.J. He is coached by Kit Ashenfelter and Bill Reichle. Fink is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. As a junior, he was chosen as New Jersey's High School Swimmer of the Year. Fink holds the state high school record in the 100-yard breaststroke and the National Independent Schools record in the 100-meter breaststroke. He earned All-America honors in the 100 breaststroke and the 50 freestyle. Fink also was chosen as a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. His father, Peter, is Senior Vice President for Events and Attractions with the NBA and the WNBA.
