ATHENS, Ga. --- As they do each year, the Georgia gymnastics team volunteered at the Special Olympics Annual Run (SOAR), a 5K race held at Hilsman Middle School in Athens. The 2010 event on Nov. 13 was the 20th annual race, with proceeds benefiting the Clarke County Schools Chapter of the Special Olympics.
The participating Gym Dogs were paired up with a "buddy" from the Special Olympics and helped him or her warm-up and complete the race.
"This event is inspirational because it shows that anybody can do something like this," said assistant coach Julie Clark. "Whether you are running or walking, it is a great fundraiser for the Special Olympics and a great accomplishment."
The Gym Dogs are active with the Special Olympics throughout the year, holding instructional gymnastics sessions in the practice facility on Monday nights.
Georgia is currently going through fall practice in anticipation of the Sneak Peek intrasquad meet Dec. 18. The season officially opens Jan. 8 in Denver, Colo., a quad meet between Georgia, Denver, BYU, and Air Force.
