GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Junior Wil Spencer added two more singles victories to his name Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional at the Ring Tennis Complex at the University of Florida.

No. 9-12 seeded Spencer first defeated Joe Delinks of Central Florida, 6-0, 6-3, in today's Round of 32 before coming back to down the fifth seed Kevin King of Georgia Tech, 6-2, 6-4, in the Round of 16. Spencer, who improves to 8-2 in singles on the fall, advances to take on the No. 4 seed Wael Kilani from South Florida in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 10 a.m. Singles semifinals matches will also be played Sunday and are scheduled for 2 p.m.

"It was a good day for Wil," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "I'm telling you, he's really taking big strides and playing some quality tennis. Unfortunately for some of our other guys they didn't make it through and lost some close matches, but that's what happens when you face the top-notch competition here."

The Bulldogs also have a team through in the doubles semifinals as the team of Ignacio Taboada and Sadio Doumbia ousted the No. 2 seed Nassim Slilam and Alex Lacroix of Florida, 8-6. The duo will meet the Georgia Tech team of Kevin King and Juan Spir tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. as one of the four teams still standing.

"I'm proud of Sadio and Ignacio winning a big match in doubles," Diaz said. "Especially for Sadio, because did not play well in singles and was frustrated, so that lifted his spirits. Ignacio as well, to play a good doubles match was great to see. They will get ready for tomorrow. They have a big challenge."

In other singles action Saturday, Doumbia defeated Florida State's Anderson Reed in the Round of 32, 6-4, 6-1, before falling to the overall No. 1 seed Guillermo Gomez of Tech, 6-3, 6-0. Senior Drake Bernstein beat Chim Gabriel of FAMU, 6-0, 7-6(1), in his first match but dropped his Round of 16 match, 6-3, 6-4, to Florida's Andrew Butz.

Georgia's freshman tandem of Garrett Brasseaux and Campbell Johnson each fell in the Round of 32, both putting up three-set fights. Brasseaux fell to GT's Magin Ortiga, 6-0, 5-7, 6-1, while Johnson was edged by FSU's Connor Smith by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

The Bulldogs' other doubles team, seventh-seeded Bernstein and Spencer, fell to No. 3 Spir and King, 8-3, in today's quarters.

In consolation singles action, Taboada downed South Florida's Yannick Yoshizawa, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Will Oliver was bested by Miami's Santiago Nieto in a third-set tiebreaker to 10, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0(8).

Tomorrow's play includes singles quarterfinals and semifinals as well as doubles semifinals. Monday will conclude competition with both final rounds, with a bid to the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on the line, Nov. 4-7 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
