Defense Pitches Shutout In 43-0 Victory: Georgia (now 3-4, 2-3 SEC) held Vanderbilt scoreless today, the first shutout since blanking Tenn. Tech 38-0 last year on Homecoming. Today, Vanderbilt finished with 140 yards on 47 plays. It was the fifth shutout in the Mark Richt era, and the second in the SEC (2006 Bulldogs blanked South Carolina 18-0 in Columbia). Today was the first SEC shutout at home since 1997, a 47-0 rout of Miss. State.
Another Homecoming Shutout: For the second year in a row, Georgia posted a shutout on Homecoming, marking the first consecutive Homecoming shutouts since 1980-81 (Vanderbilt, Kentucky) and the 23rd overall. Today it was 43-0 while last year it was 38-0 over Tennessee Tech. The 43-point margin of victory was the largest on Homecoming since 1985 when the Bulldogs routed Tulane 58-3. Georgia improved to 19-3 overall against the Commodores on Homecoming and 51-18-2 overall in the series. Georgia is 70-17-2 in all-time Homecoming contests.
Durham Hits A 100 For The Second Time: Senior SE Kris Durham hauled in the third touchdown of his career (second of the year) and finished with four catches for a career-high 112 yards. This is the second 100-yard receiving game of his career after he hauled in five catches for 101 yards against Arkansas this year. Junior FLK A.J. Green had a 48-yard TD in the third quarter to put the Bulldogs up 29-0. He has four TDs in just three games this year and 18 in his career. Green tallied three catches for 64 yards against the Commodores. He now has 2,050 yards in his career.
Murray Cruises Past Career High: Redshirt freshman QB Aaron Murray shredded the Vanderbilt defense for a career-high 287 yards, going 15-for-24 with two touchdowns. He also added 36 yards rushing.
Walsh Sets PAT Mark: Junior PK Blair Walsh hit his 115th consecutive PAT on Georgia's fifth touchdown of the day. This set a school record, passing Brandon Coutu (114). Walsh also drilled a 32-yard field goal with 7:41 left in the opening period and then a 25 yarder at the end of the half, but missed an attempt in the fourth. He is 13-for-15 on field goals this season and is 48-for-60 in his career.
Ealey Hits The Century Mark: Sophomore TB Washaun Ealey finished with 123 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries to give him his second 100-yard rushing game of his career. He had a career-long 55-yard run in the first quarter. This is the Bulldogs' second 100-yard rusher of the season after Caleb King went for 100 against Colorado.
Thomas Reaches The End Zone For First - And Second Times: Redshirt sophomore TB Carlton Thomas scored the first touchdown of his career in the final minute of the first quarter on a 15-yard run, which tied his career long. He then scampered in from 9 yards out late in the third quarter. Thomas finished with 40 yards on four carries.
Points Off Turnovers: Redshirt sophomore CB Sanders Commings snagged an interception in third quarter to give him a team-leading two picks. The Bulldogs have seven INTs in 2010. Georgia has forced 11 turnovers and converted them into 38 points while its opponents have scored 7 points off seven Bulldog miscues on the year. Senior Akeem Dent recovered a fumble on a punt at the Vanderbilt 17 with 1:05 left, and the Bulldogs ran out the clock.
First Safety Of 2010: The Bulldogs picked up their first safety of the season after Vanderbilt snapped the ball over the head of quarterback Larry Smith in the first quarter and the ball rolled out of the back of the end zone. It was the first safety for Georgia since Zach Renner blocked a punt into the end zone versus Tennessee in 2009.
Houston Extends Sack Lead: Junior OLB Justin Houston registered a sack at the end of the first quarter to force a Vanderbilt punt. This gives Houston an SEC-leading 6.5 sacks on the season. Also, he had five tackles today.
In Honor Of 'Q': Senior CB Chad Gloer wore #31, rather than his regular #47, in honor of senior safety Quintin Banks. Banks was forced to retire this preseason because of re-occurring knee injuries. He is now a student coach. A different Bulldog senior will wear #31 each game this season.
Bulldog Captains: Senior OT Clint Boling, junior OLB Justin Houston, junior CB/KOR Brandon Boykin and senior DE DeMarcus Dobbs were the captains versus the Commodores.
Homecoming: Senior Madison Asef, a native of Alpharetta majoring in Nutrition Science, is the Homecoming queen. Senior Trey Sinyard, a native of Athens majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is the Homecoming king.
Next Week's Opponent: Georgia (3-4, 2-3 SEC) travels to Lexington, Ky., to face Kentucky (3-3, 0-3) on Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised by the CSS. Kentucky knocked off Georgia 34-27 in 2009, marking only the second Wildcat win over the Bulldogs in the last 13 tries. The Wildcats play host to South Carolina at 6 p.m.
