2008 Flashback: #3 Georgia @ Arizona State
In their only meeting in history, #3 Georgia topped unranked Arizona State 27-10 in Tempe, Ariz. Bulldog tailback Knowshon Moreno, the 12th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, shredded the Sun Devils for 149 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Georgia also showed the nation its aerial capabilities as freshman A.J. Green exploded for 159 yards receiving and a score on eight catches. The Bulldogs piled on 21 second-quarter points to distance themselves from Arizona State during the longest road trip for Georgia on the mainland since 1960.
Bulldogs Against The PAC-10
Georgia is 9-4-1 against schools from the PAC-10. Georgia’s all-time record against PAC-10 teams is: Arizona - 0-0-1, Arizona State - 1-0-0, California - 2-0-0, Oregon - 1-0-0, Oregon State - 3-0-0, Stanford - 0-1-0, California - 2-0-0 and USC - 0-3-0 (the Bulldogs have never played Washington or Washington State). Before topping the Sun Devils 27-10 in 2008, the last time the Bulldogs faced a team from the PAC-10 was in 1987 against Oregon State in Athens. Georgia won that matchup 41-7.
Bring On The BCS
In 2009, Georgia will play three non-conference games against teams from BCS conferences, becoming the first from the SEC to do that since the 12th game was added in 2006. In the past three years, there were six instances of a BCS-conference school playing three fellow big-league opponents: USC (2006), Duke (2007), Florida State (2007), North Carolina (2006, 2008) and Wake Forest (2006).
Cox Named Walter Camp Foundation National Player Of The Week
Quarterback Joe Cox has been named the Walter Camp Football Foundation Bowl Championship Subdivision National Offensive Player of the Week following his performance versus Arkansas. Cox completed 18-of-25 passes (72 percent) for a career-high 375 yards and tied a school record with five touchdown passes.
Non-Conference Success
Under the direction of Mark Richt, Georgia owns a 34-4 record against teams from outside the Southeastern Conference. The only losses came in bowl games to Boston College (20-16, 2001 Music City) and #11 West Virginia (38-35, 2006 Nokia Sugar) and during the regular season to #18 Georgia Tech (45-42, 2008) and #9 Oklahoma State (24-10, 2009). In 2008, the Bulldogs beat Georgia Southern (45-21), Central Michigan (56-17), Arizona State (27-10) and #18 Michigan State (24-12 in the Capital One Bowl) and lost to the Yellow Jackets (45-42) to finish with a 4-1 non-conference record. The Bulldogs are 23-1 against non-conference foes at home.
In 2009, Georgia opened up with Oklahoma State in Stillwater and the other non-conference games feature Saturday’s matchup with Arizona State and Tennessee Tech in Athens on Nov. 7. The Bulldogs wrap up the regular season by traveling to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech on Nov. 28.
Did You Know?
The Bulldogs have scored a combined 93 points during their last two games (41-South Carolina, 52-Arkansas). This is the most points against two consecutive SEC teams since 2004 when the Bulldogs edged Florida 31-24 and whipped Kentucky 62-17.
Owning The Red Zone On Offense
The Bulldogs are a perfect 9-for-9 in the Red Zone through three games of the 2009 season. They are tied with Arkansas and Ole Miss for the league lead in this category. Georgia has scored four TDs (one rushing, three passing) and connected on five field goals. In Red Zone defense in the SEC, the Bulldogs are eighth as opponents have scored 13 out of 14 times they have been inside Georgia’s 20 yard line. Although, seven of those scores were field goals.
