ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia Lettermen’s Education Foundation (GLEF) will donate a total of $100,000 to two programs in the University of Georgia’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, foundation trustees announced today. The contribution will include a $50,000 scholarship in the Department of History in the name of Coach Vincent J. Dooley and a $50,000 scholarship to the Redcoat Band, also made in the name of Coach Dooley.

"I want to thank Mack Guest and the Georgia Lettermen Education Foundation for this distinct honor," said Dooley. "I have a special interest in both our distinguished history program and our nationally renowned Redcoat marching band here at the University."

The contribution will be to the University of Georgia Foundation, which will set up dedicated funds for both scholarships.

"This contribution reflects the unity of purpose often found between athletics and academics at the University of Georgia," said Garnett Stokes, dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. "We are honored that the Lettermen Foundation and Coach Dooley saw fit to support two of the Franklin College’s exceptional departments: the History Department and the Hugh Hodgson School of Music."

The GLEF was originally chartered in 1997 to provide scholarships for children and grandchildren of Georgia football lettermen based on academic achievement, need and merit. After achieving that goal for a number of years, the Foundation is now in the process of distributing its assets this year to beneficiaries who fit within its original guidelines.

"As we prepare to wind down activities with the Georgia Lettermen’s Education Foundation, we are pleased to be able to make these contributions to students’ academic achievements at the University," said Mack Guest, president of the GLEF.
