Did You Know?
In 2009, Georgia will play three non-conference games against teams from BCS conferences, becoming the first from the SEC to do that since the 12th game was added in 2006. In the past three years, there were six instances of a BCS-conference school playing three fellow big-league opponents: USC (2006), Duke (2007), Florida State (2007), North Carolina (2006, 2008) and Wake Forest (2006). A win over Oklahoma State would be only the second season-opening victory over a top-10 opponent in school history. The only other time it happened was when unranked Georgia beat #5 Alabama 18-17 in Athens in 1965. Overall, the Bulldogs are 1-4-1 vs. top-10 foes in season openers.
Season Openers - Last Time . . .
• Versus a Ranked Opponent: 2005, #9 Georgia beat #19 Boise State 48-13 in Athens
• Versus a Top-10 Ranked Opponent : 1968, Unranked Georgia tied #9 Tennessee 17-17 in Knoxville
• Out of the South: 1958, Unranked Georgia lost to #11 Texas 13-8 in Austin
• Out of the South and Won: 1953, Unranked Georgia beat Villanova 32-19 in Philadelphia
• Against Oklahoma State: 2007, #13 Georgia beat unranked OSU 35-14 in Athens
Non-Conference Success
Under the direction of Mark Richt, Georgia owns a 34-3 record against teams from outside the Southeastern Conference. The only losses came in bowl games to Boston College (20-16, 2001 Music City) and West Virginia (38-35, 2006 Nokia Sugar) and during the regular season to Georgia Tech (45-42, 2008). In 2008, the Bulldogs beat Georgia Southern (45-21) Central Michigan (56-17), Arizona State (27-10) and Michigan State (24-12 in the Capital One Bowl) and lost to Ga. Tech (45-42) to finish with a 4-1 non-conference record. The Bulldogs are 23-1 against non-conference foes at home. In 2009, Georgia will open up with Oklahoma State in Stillwater and the other non-conference games feature a Sept. 26 visit by Arizona State; Tennessee Tech comes to town on Nov. 7; and the Bulldogs wrap up the regular season by traveling to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech on Nov. 28.
Winning With Richt
Mark Richt is one of only seven head coaches who has won 80 or more NCAA Division I football games in his fi rst eight seasons. His victories in that span include two SEC Championships and 27 wins over ranked teams. Georgia has attended a bowl game every season since Mark Richt took over as head coach and the team’s current streak of post-season appearances stands at 12. Current head coach Mark Richt is 8-0 in season openers. In fact under Richt, the Bulldogs are 30-4 in an opponent’s stadium, including 10-2 versus ranked opponents. The last time Georgia was on the road to start the season was in 2003 when the Bulldogs shutout the Clemson Tigers 30-0.
