August 11, 2009 | Football

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia defensive tackles Geno Atkins and Jeff Owens and receiver A.J. Green have been named to preseason "Watch Lists" for national awards. Atkins and Owens are both being considered for the Outland Trophy, which is given to the top interior lineman in the country, while Green is a candidate for the Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to the nation's outstanding college football receiver.

Atkins, a 6-1, 290-pound senior from Pembroke Pines, Fla., was a third-team All-SEC performer last season. He started all 13 games in 2008, posting 34 tackles, including 7.5 for 17 yards lost, and leading the Bulldogs with 32 quarterback pressures.

Owens, a 6-3, 300-pound senior from Sunrise, Fla., already has been named to the watch list for the 2009 Lott Trophy. Owens suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of the Bulldogs opener against Georgia Southern a year ago. In 2007, he started all 13 games for Georgia and registered 27 tackles, with 4.0 for eight yards loss, and 22 QB hurries.

Green, 6-4, sophomore from Summerville, S.C., was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year by league coaches and was a consensus Freshman All-America selection last season. He led SEC in receiving yards per game (74.1) and tied among league leaders for touchdowns catches (8). Green also broke the Georgia freshman record for receptions with 56 catches and his 963 receiving yards represented the third-best tally in school history.

Most of the watch lists for national honors are being revealed on a daily basis on ESPN's College Football Live. Last Thursday, junior safety Reshad Jones was named to the ledger for the Jim Thorpe Award for the nation's top defensive back. The following awards are slated to release their watch lists on the show later this week: Lou Groza (Aug. 12); Chuck Bednarik Award (Aug. 13) and the Maxwell Award (Aug. 14).
