BLED, Slovenia --- Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora shot 3-under 143 to finish fifth individually in stroke play qualifying in the 2009 European Amateur Ladies' Team Championship at the Bled Golf and Country Club. Silva Zamora helped the Spanish National Team to a third-place showing in competition for seeding in the match play draw, which begins on Thursday.
A rising sophomore from Santiago del Compostela, Spain, Silva Zamora posted rounds of 71 and 72 on the par-73 layout and finished four shots off the lead. Spain's Carlota Ciganda, a rising sophomore at Arizona State, and the Netherlands' Marieke Nivard tied for individual medalist honors at 7-under 139.
As a team, Spain finished at 740, seven strokes behind France. Sweden placed second at 735. Spain will face sixth-seeded Denmark in the opening round of match play competition in the championship draw.
Silva Zamora failed to finish Tuesday's first round due to weather delays but returned early Wednesday morning to wrap up her 2-under loop. After eight straight pars, Silva Zamora bogeyed No. 9 to turn at 1-over; however, she rallied on the back side with birdies at No. 12, No. 13 and No. 15.
In her second round on Wednesday afternoon, Silva Zamora turned at 1-under after bogeying No. 1 but carding birdies at No. 3 and No. 5. She bounced back from a bogey at No. 11 with a birdie at No. 12 before finishing with six straight pars.
This represents the fifth straight summer Silva Zamora has played for Spain in European Championship competition. She competed in the Girls' Team Championships from 2005-08. Silva Zamora earned her spot on this summer's squad by finishing fourth at the Spanish Amateur last month.
