July 17, 2009 | Gymnastics
ATHENS, Ga. --- Julie Ballard Clark, a fixture in the Georgia gymnastics program for more than a decade, has been named assistant coach, according to an announcement by new head coach Jay Clark.
Clark has served as a volunteer assistant coach since 2001 with the exception of 2008 when she held the position of Director of Gymnastics Operations.
“Julie knows the ins and outs of Georgia gymnastics, and she knows what it takes to be a winner,” said Jay Clark, who is also her husband. “We are excited that she can take on this new role. I really believe in promoting from within. Doug (McAvinn), Julie and I make a good team. Keeping the continuity and chemistry intact will be important as our program moves forward."
Julie Clark was a standout performer for the Gym Dogs from 1995-98, twice earning All-America honors and helping the 1998 squad win the national championship. She also was named the 1995 SEC Freshman of the Year. The native of Metairie, La., graduated from Georgia in 1999 with a degree in Administration in Recreation and Leisure Studies.
Including her days as a gymnast and as a volunteer and director, Georgia has won six NCAA titles (including each of the last five) and nine SEC championships.
Julie Clark formerly served as promotions, marketing and general director of all programs as well as an optional level coach and class instructor for Classic City Gymnastics Academy in Athens. She is a contract choreographer and motivational speaker for young gymnasts and children across the country. She also has addressed FCA groups as well as elementary and high schools.
