Georgia Riders Improve Already Strong Classroom Performance

June 11, 2009 | Equestrian

ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia Equestrian Team, national champion in the competition ring, also excels in the classroom, according to recent statistics.  The Bulldog riders recorded a 3.19 aggregate grade point average in the Spring Semester, an outstanding mark that improved by a full one-tenth of a point from the previous academic term.

Of the 65 student-athletes on the 2009 Georgia squad, 40 earned appointment to the UGAA Athletic Director's Honor Roll for having GPAs of at least 3.0.  That's twice the number that achieved the honor during Fall Semester.  Among that elite group, two riders were cited for classroom performance that produced nearly straight-A results.  Kelley Cowperthwait and Erin Dwyer recorded GPAs approaching 4.0.

"We are really happy with the progress our girls have made, for sure," Boenig said.  "It's always a goal of ours to improve our team GPA by a tenth each semester.  Typically, the Spring Semester is hardest to show improvement because of our competition schedule.  A lot of factors went into making this a successful semester.  Lynn Smith, our advisor, should get a lot of credit, and the efforts of our girls -- making good use of tutoring, study hall and other resources -- also helped produce great results."

Adding to the challenge of Spring Semester was the month-long move to the Equestrian team's new home facility in Bishop, Ga.

The Bulldogs in mid-April captured the overall first prize at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships.  It was the program's second straight title and the fourth in its seven-year history.
