Another Top 10 Final Ranking For Women's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. --- For the 21st time in Jeff Wallace’s 24 seasons at the helm, the University of Georgia women’s tennis team has finished the year nationally ranked in the ITA top 10. The 2009 squad ended the year No. 3 after going 27-3 and advancing to the NCAA Final Four. The Bulldogs have been in the top five 12 times under Wallace including finishing No. 1 in 1994 and 2000.
Georgia freshman Chelsey Gullickson earned All-America honors in singles and doubles while freshman Nadja Gilchrist was a doubles All-American with Gullickson. The Gullickson/Gilchrist team ended the season ranked No. 7 with a 13-5 record. They were the first all-freshmen team to ever play in the No. 1 doubles spot in the lineup for Wallace.
Gullickson, the 2009 ITA National Rookie of the Year, went 43-10 in singles with 31 wins over ranked opponents. She advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship as the No. 8 seed. She made the NCAA All-Tournament team at the No. 1 singles spot. Gullickson’s final singles ranking was No. 6.
By virtue of her final ranking, NCAA Tournament seed and finish, Gullickson earned All-America honors. In singles, student-athletes can be an All-American by being a top 16 seed in the NCAA Championships, or reach the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships, or finish in the top 20 of the final ITA rankings. For doubles All-America honors, student-athletes must either be a top eight seed at the NCAA Championships, or reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships, or, finish in the top 10 of the final ITA rankings.
Also in the final singles rankings, junior Yvette Hyndman came in at No. 57; Gilchrist was No. 61; senior Monika Dancevic was No. 98. Gilchrist had the best record among this trio at 35-11 including 22-6 in dual matches while Dancevic was the Most Valuable Player at the SEC Tournament.
Georgia's team highlights included reaching the finals of the National Team Indoor Championships, winning the SEC title, its third straight SEC Tournament crown, advancing to the NCAA semifinals and going 13-0 at home. The top five teams in the final rankings were Duke, Northwestern, Georgia, California and Notre Dame.
