Georgia Soccer Takes On Central Florida Saturday

April 02, 2009 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. --- After falling short of expectations in losing both ends of a double-header last week, the Georgia soccer team looks to redeem itself Saturday when the Bulldogs face Central Florida at 6 p.m. in Viera, Fla.

The game is featured as a part of the Second Annual Ovarian Cancer Awareness Tournament. Other teams scheduled to compete in the event include Florida State, Florida, Florida International, South Florida, Florida Tech and Rollins College.

“We look forward to representing Georgia in the Ovarian Cancer Awareness matches,” head coach Patrick Baker said. “UCF is a very talented side that has enjoyed an enormous amount of success lately and they we will be a difficult test for us. I am pleased with how our players have responded from last weekend's performances against West Virginia and Tennessee. We have addressed some key components with quality training sessions from coach Steve Nugent and coach Robin Confer.”

Last weekend, Georgia was defeated by West Virginia and Tennessee in a doubleheader in Knoxville. In its first game against West Virginia, Georgia allowed an early score by the Mountaineers in a 1-0 loss. In the second game, Carrie Patterson scored an early goal, but Tennessee recorded the match’s final three scores as the Lady Volunteers won 3-1.

The Bulldogs spring exhibition record stands at 1-3 heading into their match against Central Florida, with all four games having been played against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. Central Florida advanced into the tournament’s second round after defeating Miami (Fla.) in the first round, but then lost to Florida.

The Knights finished the 2008 season with a 14-6-3 record and a 7-2-2 regular season record in C-USA competition. They advanced to the semifinals of the postseason conference tournament and had wins during the season against NCAA-Tournament teams Florida, Illinois and Memphis.

UCF will provide the Bulldogs with another challenging match, but after a good week of training, Baker believes his squad will be ready for Saturday.

“Our team needs everyone to play well and do their part for us to be successful - that did not happen last weekend,” Baker said. “We put a premium on possession, yet we gave the ball away cheaply time and time again against West Virginia and Tennessee. Hopefully with the paces we have put the team through this week, it will allow us to give a better account for ourselves this Saturday.”

A complete recap of Saturday’s match will be available at georgiadogs.com. Georgia’s final game of the spring season will be April 18 against Clemson.
