Georgia Wins Second Straight National EQ Championship
April 18, 2009 | Equestrian
WACO, Texas --- With final-day action still underway, the Georgia Equestrian team has already secured the overall team title its second straight and the fourth in the program’s seven-year history at the Varsity National Championships here Saturday afternoon.
Georgia’s title came courtesy of a loss by Texas A&M, the only team capable of toppling the Bulldogs, in the fifth-place Hunt Seat dual match. The Aggies needed to win that match, as well as their Western championship match with Texas Christian, and then hope for losses by Georgia in both of its matches on Saturday.
With the A&M loss, Georgia can do no worse than a 1-point overall victory. The Varsity Championship scoring system awards the following values to places finishes in the Hunt Seat and Western disciplines: 1st place 36 points; 2nd place 28 points; 3rd place 21 points; 4th place 15 points; 5th place 10 points; 6th place 6 points; 7th and 8th place 1.5 points apiece.
The Bulldogs’ Western riders did bow in their third-place match earlier, dropping a 5-3 decision to Oklahoma State. Georgia is also competing against SEC rival Auburn on Saturday afternoon for the Hunt Seat crown.
