Georgia Golfers Hosting Texas Tech In Match Play Event

March 09, 2009 | Men's Golf

ATHENS, Ga. --- The top-ranked Georgia men’s golf team will have a rare match play event against an opponent on Tuesday at the UGA Golf Course.

The Bulldogs and members of the No. 10 Texas Tech squad will tee off at 9 a.m. Tuesday in five twosomes. The first team to win three matches will be declared the winner of the exhibition event.

“I think it should be a lot of fun,” Georgia senior captain Adam Mitchell said. “It’s going to be a tough match, so we will need to just go out and play our games and we will do well. Texas Tech has a very good team. They just won a tournament on Sunday, so I’m sure they are coming into Athens on a very high note and they will be ready to play. The players and coaches on their team are good guys, and we will have a lot of fun with them.”

The extra play day appeared on the Georgia and Texas Tech schedules when the Linger Longer Invitational was shifted to a two-day tournament. Rather than not take advantage of the extra day, the Georgia and Texas Tech coaches reached an agreement to have the match play event.

Match play is not utilized very much in collegiate golf as most of the tournaments use a stroke-play format with five golfers playing and the four lowest scores counting. However, the NCAA Championship is going to introduce match play into part of its format this season, so Georgia coach Chris Haack said Tuesday’s competition will be advantageous for both teams.

“We are really looking forward to it,” Haack said. “There’s a completely different mindset involved in match play. Going head-to-head with another golfer is exciting and adds a different dimension to it. I think both teams will get a lot out of this, not to mention have a little fun.”

At the NCAAs later this spring, the 30 teams will play 54 holes of stroke play and will crown an individual national champion. The low eight teams at that point will then advance to stroke play, with the team national champion needing to win three matches.

Fans are invited to watch Tuesday’s match between Georgia and Texas Tech. There is no cost for admission.
