Georgia Soccer Drops Contests To West Virginia, Tennessee

March 28, 2009 | Soccer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The Georgia Bulldog soccer team dropped a pair of exhibition matches Saturday afternoon in Knoxville, Tenn., losing 1-0 to West Virginia and 3-1 to Tennessee.

Through four matches this spring, the Bulldogs are 1-3, with their victory coming last weekend against Wake Forest. Georgia dropped a 1-0 decision to Florida State Feb. 28 in the spring opener.

“We were disappointed in our effort and commitment to make each other better,” head coach Patrick Baker said. “West Virginia and Tennessee both deserved to win and we have a lot of work to do before playing Central Florida next weekend. We tried some different things today and unfortunately some of the tinkering didn’t look very good. But that is one thing that the spring is about experimentation.”

Georgia opened Saturday’s doubleheader against West Virginia, which would get the deciding score off the foot of Megan Mischler just 1:33 into the contest. Baker used several different formations of players and lineups through the game, but none could produce the equalizing goal.

The Bulldogs turned the tables on Tennessee in their second match of the day. In the third minute, Alex Hooker scored Georgia’s only goal of the day off assists from Rebekah Perry and Jamie Pollock to take an early 1-0 lead.

Following the early Bulldog goal, the Lady Volunteers took control of the contest and scored the game’s final three goals. Tennessee got two before halftime, then added another in the 61st minute to finish the scoring at 3-1.

Baker said his squad did have sequences of good play, but was generally careless with its possessions, which led to West Virginia and Tennessee’s offensive opportunities.

“At times we did look good, but we gave the ball away cheaply all over the field,” he said. “We needed a higher percentage of completed passes out of the back.”

Georgia will continue its spring schedule next weekend when the Bulldogs travel to face Central Florida in the Cancer Awareness Tournament. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.
