How Do You Choose Who Fills A Vacant Spot?

Nikki from Chapel Hill asks....

Congrats on your season high score! I was curious as to what happened to Gina during warm-ups to prevent her from performing on bars and balance beam? Since she wasn't able to compete how did you go about choosing who filled her spot? And Sessler's bar routine was beautiful with that stuck landing. Will she be put into the bar line up more often?

Go Dawgs!

Dear Nikki:

Gina hyper extended her leg during vault warm ups and as a result has a bad bone bruise in her knee.  As a result, she will be out for a couple of weeks.  We believe her to be one of our top six vaulters but she has not been able to get much training time due to constant injury set backs.  We were excited to get her on three events last night and hope to get her going as soon as possible.

In all meets, we have an alternate ready to go.  Last night, Lauren Johnson was the vault alternate but Gina was going exhibition so Lauren did not have to step in but on bars and beam Gina was in the actual  line up.  Sessler was the bar alternate and Kat Ding was the beam alternate.

In terms of you question concerning the bar line up and Sessler, I can’t say how much more she will compete on bars.  Yes, she had a great routine and came through strong for us but bars is the event that we have a lot of depth on and McCool will be back in two weeks.  With only six spots, it is hard to say at this point.

Thanks for your concern.

Suzanne
