Bulldogs Enjoy Solid Start To Preseason Practice

ATHENS-----The Georgia baseball team held its third intrasquad scrimmage in as many days Tuesday as the Bulldogs prepare for the season opener less than three weeks away.
After a pair of low-scoring games Sunday and Monday, the Bulldogs combined for 10 runs and 13 hits in the six-inning game on Tuesday.
“The first couple of days I didn’t know if we could pitch well or we just couldn’t hit,” head coach David Perno said. “I’ve been pleased with our pitching. We’ve thrown good fastballs and our secondary pitches have been solid. The key to these early scrimmages is to get them behind you and improve as you go along.”
Freshman Colby May recorded a team-high three hits in Tuesday’s scrimmage. Preseason All-America Rich Poythress blasted a three-run home run to left-center and finished with four RBI. Adam Fuller had two hits including a two-run home run, and Jeff Bissell added a pair of hits.
Jason Leaver and Stephen Ochs took the mound for their respective teams as Leaver threw two scoreless innings while Ochs allowed one run in two innings of work. Zach Laughlin, Chase Hawkins, Brent Hallman and Drew Haggard also saw action on the mound.
The Bulldogs will enjoy an off day Wednesday before resuming practice on Thursday. The next scrimmage is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. followed by scrimmages Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Georgia opens the season Feb. 20 against Youngstown State.
