Lady Bulldogs Lose Rematch With Vanderbilt
February 15, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Nashville, Tenn. --- Georgia's Danielle Taylor scored 22 points, an SEC career best for the senior from Savannah, but it was not enough to overcome a balanced Vanderbilt attack during an 80-64 loss to the Commodores at Memorial Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
Vanderbilt (20-6, 9-2 SEC) avenged an 11-point loss to Georgia (15-10, 5-5 SEC) last month in Athens. Kristina Wirth, who scored a season-low three points in January, poured in a game-high 21 points in the rematch to lead five Commodores in double digits.
Angel Robinson added 17 points and Christy Marshall chipped in 14 for Georgia. Ashley Houts scored seven points and in the process became Georgia's 30th 1,000-point career scorer.
Porsha Phillips, the Lady Bulldogs' leading scorer in SEC play, scored six points before fouling out in just 12 minutes of action. That marked the first league game Phillips has failed to reach double figures this season.
"If you look at the box scores from the two games I would bet the difference in minutes for Wirth and Phillips would be just about flopped," Andy Landers said. "Wirth was in early foul trouble in Athens, and Phillips was in foul trouble early today."
A Robinson jumper capped a 7-0 surge for Georgia that knotted the score at 47-47 with 10:28 left. Vanderbilt answered with a four-point play on its next trip. Wirth canned a jumper while Meredith Mitchell was simultaneously called for a foul away from the ball. Meredith Marsh hit both ends of a one-and-one to put Vanderbilt up 51-47.
Taylor answered with a three-point play of her own on the Lady Bulldogs' ensuing possession, but a Wirth three ignited a 13-0 decisive run by Vanderbilt.
Much like last month's contest, the Lady Bulldogs started quickly and utilized their height advantage inside to do so. Georgia opened up a 16-7 lead with 13:10 remaining in the first half, with Phillips, Robinson and Taylor combining to score 14 during the run.
Vanderbilt chipped away at that margin and eventually knotted the game at 24-24 on a Wirth jumper with 5:28 left in the period. The Commodores eventually finished the half on a 14-5 surge to enter the locker room with a 34-29 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to Stegeman Coliseum on Thursday when they host LSU at 7:00 p.m. Two promotions will be held in conjunction with that contest. The first 300 UGA students will receive free pizza and "Beat LSU" T-shirts. In addition, all fans can get $1 admission coupons from the Varsity on Broad Street.
