February 15, 2009 | Baseball

ATHENS-----With the start of the 2009 season just five days away, the 14th-ranked Georgia baseball team held its final preseason intrasquad scrimmage Sunday at Foley Field.

The Bulldogs will begin game week preparations for Youngstown State on Monday.

“Practice has been great,” said head coach David Perno. “We are ready to go. Everybody is excited we don’t have to play each other any more. Now we have some tough decisions ahead as we trim down the roster.”

Preseason All-America first baseman Rich Poythress led the team with two hits Sunday in the Bulldogs’ third scrimmage in as many days. Justin Grimm and Stephen Ochs each allowed one run in four innings of work.

On Saturday, the two teams combined for 24 hits including five by Bryce Massanari and four by Adam Fuller. Alex McRee and Jason Leaver started for their respective teams. In Friday’s scrimmage, Matt Cerione, Joey Lewis, Colby May and Poythress had two hits apiece while Trevor Holder and Cecil Tanner both pitched four innings.

The first game of the three-game series between the Bulldogs and Penguins is slated for Friday at 5 p.m.
