February 14, 2009 | Gymnastics
The Gym Dogs posted a score of 196.975 to outdistance No. 29 Kentucky’s 195.150 and No. 52 Centenary’s 187.350. Georgia improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the SEC.
Georgia’s Courtney Kupets won the all-around title for the seventh straight meet with a score of 39.575. Kupets also won the bars and beam titles outright and shared the floor title. Georgia’s Kathryn Ding was the individual winner on vault.
“I thought we did well tonight,” Georgia coach Suzanne Yoculan said. “We were a little up and down, but just little bumps and not deep holes. It’s a process and we keep putting the pieces of the puzzle together. It’s nice to have back-to-back good meets, which we haven’t done since early in the season. It was nice to get back on track. We still have a lot of tweaking to do; nothing major, just some little things.”
The Gym Dogs opened with a 49.475 on bars. After Marcia Newby (9.825) and Ding and Hilary Mauro (9.850 each) got Georgia off to a solid start, Grace Taylor went 9.925, Tiffany Tolnay posted a 9.900 and Kupets anchored with a 9.95.
Georgia recorded a 49.175 on beam as Kupets led the way with a 9.900. Mauro led off with a 9.850, Tolnay pitched in a 9.825, and Cassidy McComb and Taylor each scored a 9.800.
Kupets notched another 9.900 to pace Georgia to a 49.150 on floor. Taylor added a 9.850, followed by Mauro with a 9.825, McComb with a 9.800 and Abby Stack with a 9.775.
The Gym Dogs capped the meet on vault, scoring a 49.175. Ding’s 9.900 in the second spot boosted Georgia, with Tolnay recording a 9.850, Kupets and Newby each getting a 9.825, and Mauro and McComb each posting a 9.775.
Georgia will return to action next Friday at Arkansas.
