Gym Dogs Preview Routines At Sneak Peek
December 06, 2009 | Gymnastics
ATHENS, Ga. --- The five-time defending national champion Georgia gymnastics team previewed its season routines at the annual Sneak Peek Saturday at the Suzanne Yoculan Gymnastics Center. It was a chance for fans to catch a glimpse of the No. 1 Gym Dogs before the season opener against seventh-ranked Stanford on Jan. 9.
“I thought overall it was a success,” said head coach Jay Clark. “Certainly there are highs and lows any time you do something like this. I thought the freshmen overall did fairly well. We’re just rough around the edges, and we are about 85 percent there. I don’t think it was indicative of how we’ve been training, but I do think it was indicative of how we would compete right out of the gate.”
The Gym Dogs split into two teams, the Red vs. the Black. Both teams performed full routines on vault, bars, beam and floor, and the Black team won by a score of 136.200-134.050.
“I think we are definitely on our way to being at 110 percent when we go against Stanford,” freshman Noel Couch said. “We really got the energy going and it was fun to be out there with the girls. I really had a great time, and I feel like we are all getting it together. By the team the meet comes it is going to be awesome.”
On vault, two-time All-American Marcia Newby led all gymnasts with a 9.95 while Cassidy McComb posted a 9.85. Sophomore Kat Ding scored a team-high 9.90 on bars, ahead of 9.85s by Newby and Courtney McCool.
McCool had the high beam score of the day with a 9.95, and senior Grace Taylor had a 9.90. On floor, junior Hilary Mauro, Ding and McCool each scored a 9.85. Taylor, a three-time All-American, also posted a 9.80 on floor.
Couch, Ding, McComb and freshman Shayla Worley performed on all four events.
“Hopefully this helped us from a preparation standpoint to be better than this on Jan. 9 because we are better than that on a daily basis,” Clark said. “Obviously we haven’t reached a confidence level to where they feel comfortable. I thought beam was strong and bars was strong. We’re a month away, and I think we’ll be fine.”
“It went really well,” Taylor said. “We learned a lot as a team. It was crucial for the end of fall training to have a Sneak Peek like this. It gives us a lot of momentum heading into the break.”
