Football Awards Annouced at UGA Football Gala

ATHENS -- Junior linebacker Rennie Curran of Snellville; sophomore wide receiver A.J. Green of Summerville, S.C.; senior defensive tackle Geno Atkins of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; sophomore punter Drew Butler of Duluth; and sophomore plackicker Blair Walsh of Boca Raton, Fla. took home the top awards at the University of Georgia football annual team Gala Saturday night at the Classic Center in Athens.
   
Green was named the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player, Walsh and Butler the Most Valuable Special Teams Players, Atkins the Most Valuable Defensive Player, and Curran was named winner of the Vince Dooley Most Valuable Player of the Year Award.

Senior defensive tackle Jeff Owens of Sunrise, Fla., was named the winner of the David Jacobs Award as the player who by example portrays courage, spirit, character, and determination.

Senior quarterback Joe Cox of Charlotte, N.C., was named the team's permanent overall captain while senior wide receiver Michael Moore of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was named the offensive captain; senior defensive tackle Jeff Owens of Sunrise, Fla., and junior linebacker Rennie Curran of Snellville were named the defensive co-captains; and Prince Miller of Duncan, S.C., the special teams captain.

The Leon Farmer Award for dedication to the strength and conditioning program was presented to senior wide receiver Michael Moore of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.   Outstanding Scout Team Awards went to junior tight end Derek Rich of Gainesville and freshman center Ben Reynolds of Bainbridge (offense); freshman defensive end Reuben Faloughi of Martinez and freshman defensive tackle Kwame Geathers of Georgetown, S.C. (defense); and freshman linebackers Cameron Allen of Canton and Jackson Griffeth of Gainesville (special teams).

Most Improved Player Awards were presented to sophomore tight end Aron White of Columbia, Mo. (offense); junior safety Reshad Jones of Atlanta (defense); and sophomore cornerback Brandon Boykin of Fayetteville (special teams).

Newcomer of the Year Award winners were freshman wide receiver Tavarres King of Mount Airy and freshman tailback Washaun Ealey of Stillmore (offense); freshman safety Bacarri Rambo of Donalsonville and defensive tackle Abry Jones of Warner Robins (defense); and freshman defensive backs Branden Smith of Atlanta and Shawn Williams of Damascus (special teams).
